APPLICATION: Coding & marking on automotive components

Customer Profile

An automotive component manufacturer needs to print codes and marks on a wide range of substrates, sizes and unusual shapes.

Business Outcomes

The highly flexible, easy-to-use and cost-effective M7 printer is used for printing essential codes in multiple colors on every component.

Approach

Meenjet M7 printer, featuring HP Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) technology enables high-resolution coding without setting up production lines for each oddly shaped or heavy part.

Challenge

Meenjet’s customer must correctly code and mark every auto component. But many different shapes, sizes, quantities, colors and materials—metal, plastic, rubber and glass—are used to manufacture a vehicle. If print volumes are low, production line setup cost is not justified. With Continuous Inkjet Printers (CIJ), setting up a production line for each part was costly: changing ink colors is not easy and operators need training. A flexible, cost-effective and easy-to-use printing solution was needed that, straight out of the box, could apply high-definition, durable codes in multiple colors to challenging shapes and surfaces.

Solution

Meenjet’s handheld M7 TIJ printer, featuring HP 2590 Black Solvent Ink and spot colors, ensures a highresolution and quality coding, including QR codes for many different surfaces, shapes and positions, or even for curved surfaces via an adaptor. The M7 is small, rugged and adaptable; changing colors takes seconds by swapping cartridges, each printing 50,000 codes on average. Codes are downloaded from a flash drive to a 600dpi high-definition display.

Outcomes

Meenjet’s customer can apply essential codes in multiple colors on every component shaped differently without setting up production lines and slowing production. HP solvent ink in easy-to-change cartridges delivers consistent, reliable, cost-effective results on various substrates. Meenjet reported HP original cartridges delivers 50% longer printings than non-original copy cartridges. Meenjet has sold more than 200,000 of its printers worldwide.
